Health Insurers Yet to Make a Mark in Rural Markets

Currently, State-funded schemes are driving rural penetration

Chennai/ Bangalore, May 20: 

Even as Government-backed health insurance has picked up, general insurers still find the going tough in rural and semi-urban markets.

State-funded insurance in States such as Tamil Nadu is driving affordability in small towns and bringing more people under insurance cover, said Mr S. Premkumar, CEO, Apollo Hospitals. For instance, Star Health, which bagged the Tamil Nadu insurance mandate, collected a premium of Rs 600 crore last year from the scheme.

Five years ago, former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said that the health care system in this country is not sustainable. Double-digit annual rate increases for health insurance had become the norm, and companies and municipalities groaned under the added costs.

Two years ago, Shrewsbury Town Manager Daniel J. Morgado told me the town’s health care costs in one year equaled the entire budgets of the town’s police and fire departments. If health care costs continued to increase at a double-digit pace, he said, Shrewsbury would eventually pay more for health insurance annually than it would for its entire municipal budget, excluding schools.

Feds ease deadline for state to create insurance exchange

Tennessee lawmakers won’t need a special session to determine whether to set up a state health insurance exchange called for in the federal health care reform law, according to Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey.

Ramsey, R-Blountville, had floated the idea of holding a special session later this year on creating an exchange pending a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the law this summer.
